Setting Up and Optimizing WordPress 3.0 for Your Business Website

Having a website is crucial for business success today. Since that is true, why not use a flexible but economical solution which you can easily set up and optimize – WordPress 3.0? With 77% or more Americans and Canadians using the internet, having a website can make or break a company; in fact, having no website or a poor website even showed on a list of reasons why new businesses fail.

WordPress websites meet the criteria of what a new business needs: a website that is flexible, easy to use, effective – and cheap! Gone are the days when for thousands of dollar you could only get a nice website from your ad agency or marketing communication firm , which was, of course, only updateable by them.

WordPress websites from wordpress.org are free, though you must pay a few dollars a month for hosting from GoDaddy or some other provider. You just apply your domain name to create “yourbusiness.com.” Paying for the hosting is a much better choice than going to wordpress.com and obtaining a totally free site which will have the WordPress name in the address – i.e, “yourcompany.wordpress.com.” These .com sites have some limitations in the features you can add.

WordPress offers many free themes which can match your other marketing materials once you add your header. Of course, you can always buy a special theme or have someone modify it. It is “open source” software, so if do you do hire a professional, they will have no trouble getting access to what they need to work with the site.

Like any other website, a WordPress site has a structure built in so that certain elements appear on each page. If you are doing the site yourself, you must carefully plan how you want the site to work and function. In the design process, you can easily experiment with re-ordering the different elements to achieve the look you want, within the framework of the template.

If you have time, you can even set up the site yourself, add pages to reflect your business needs, and add many functional features to the site through the use of plugins that are also offered to users, most often for free. (The open source nature of WordPress invites many third party developers to create many useful plugins.) If you are looking for a feature, you can pull up list of available plugins that comes complete with a user ranking. You can integrate with social networks, add a shopping cart, manage members, add maps, and more, so your site has all the features you want. If your needs change, you – or your trusty office assistant – can update the site, change the theme, or add more features. WordPress routinely lists on site if updates are available. (Currently, the version offered is WordPress 3.2.) Most are minor, but occasionally, the updates are more extensive; in any case, upgrading is free and simple. This is a far cry from having to buy a new version of Microsoft Office or of being stuck with an outdated website built on an obsolete platform. With a simple click, you can have a website that is current in the technology and ready for you to update with fresh content.

WordPress sites also include a blog that is integrated with your site. Even if you have had your site designed by professionals, you can easily add a new blog post and even schedule it for future publication. The site offers a visual editor so you can easily see how your blog will look.

Aside from appearance and function, you want a website that will bring your business. WordPress sites are Google-friendly, so will get good search engine results. You can add plugins like the All-In-One SEO Pack and Google XML Sitemaps, but even without these additions, WordPress sites help you get found on the internet. In a world where keeping your business up-to-date can often be pricey, WordPress 3.0 is free and functional – and does the job you need it to do in promoting your company. Setting it up and optimizing it to be effective is fairly easy.
