Something For Everyone In Barcelona

There’s always lots going on in a city whatever it is that interests you, from visiting art galleries and museums and learning about the history and the culture of the place, to sports and entertainment, sightseeing, shopping and architecture. When it comes to taking a city break you are generally spoilt for choice and it’s just a matter of selecting the things you most want to see and take pleasure in doing.

Barcelona’s ‘Guia del ocio’ might be worth picking up if you want to see what’s on in the city. It has sections telling you what’s on at the cinema and theatre, the best restaurants to dine at, tourism, where you can hear your kind of music, art galleries and exhibitions, stylish bars to hang out at, hotels, gay Barcelona, even fiestas-erótica! Out on Thursdays, you can pick it up at any of the kiosks on the streets, or just look online for information on what to do in the city.

The Catalonian capital is one destination that’s increasingly popular with international visitors due to the wealth of places of interest, attractions and activities it has to offer. Most top bands stop off here on their world tour, if you’re a fan of Moby then you can catch him playing at the Poble Espanyol in July, whilst over at the Olympic Stadium Bon Jovi is appearing. Tickets might already be sold out for events but there may still be some left for George Michael in September, Rihanna in December at the Palau Sant Jordi, or Roxette at the Sant Jordi Club in November. During the months of July and August there is a special open air cinema event on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The films don’t start until 10.00 at night and are shown under the walls on the fort on Montjuic, last year they had Charlie Chaplin movies, Revolutionary Road by Sam Mendes and Rockandrolla by Guy Ritchie so it’s pretty eclectic. Bring your supper along, watch a movie outdoors and enjoy the live jazz sessions, it’s the perfect way to enjoy a hot summer evening.

The Festa Major de Gràcia is in August and takes place in Gràcia, a district that is slightly bohemian with ethnic restaurants, café terraces and lively street festivals. There are more than 600 events going on with dancing, theatre and music over a period of 9 nights, the streets are brightly decorated in a carnival style by the people living here as there’s a competition for the best decorated street. Half a million people join in and you get to see lots of magnificent Catalan traditions in a packed programme of concerts and activities that jam the streets every night during the festival.

September is always a good time to visit Barcelona as the weather is great and you get to experience La Mercé. Named after its patron saint you can expect music and dance as well as some truly spectacular traditions such as the castellers which are towering castles made from people, and the correfoc where huge dragons breath fire over on-lookers and demons spew sparks. There is also a very popular 10km fun run across the city during the Mercé.

Celebrating its 50th edition in November is Saló Nautico, the International Boat Show and one of the biggest of its kind. Held at the Gran Via and Port Vell exhibition centres it features several new products, including motorboats and sailboats, along with leisure, sporting and cultural ideas. The aim is to encourage people to take more interest in the ocean and it’s the leading commercial platform of its kind in the country.

Most trade fairs are held at the Fira de Barcelona, a highly recognized industrial trade show organizer, and a place worth checking out what’s on if you are coming to the city as it has some fascinating events of interest. Occupying a total of 250,000 m2, it features 8 different palaces and holds 70 different exhibitions each year.
