Half Dome
The Dome in Architectural Design
The dome is one of the greatest achievements of architecture, surpassed in ingenuity and technical skill only by the suspension bridge and skyscraper. The dome is a structural element which resembles the hollow upper half of a sphere. Domes adorn some of the greatest structures in architecture: Hagia Sophia in Constantinople (now Istanbul), St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, and The Taj Mahal in India.
Domes made of various materials have been used in construction since prehistory. The ancients had a fascination with oddly shaped structures: The Egyptians built the Great Pyramids as the final resting place for their pharaohs, while corbel domes have been discovered among the tombs and buildings of the ancient Middle East. The ancient Romans were the first civilization to perfect the architectural dome.
Once the Romans mastered dome construction, they created astonishing structures such as the Pantheon, which is topped by a magnificent dome with a central oculus that admits sunlight. Visitors today are astonished by the technical skill and symmetry of the Pantheon’s central dome. The tradition of domed religious structures continued unabated even after the Roman Empire adopted Christianity and transformed into the Byzantine Empire.
In the 6th century, the Byzantine Emperor Justinian commissioned the reconstruction of the church of Hagia Sophia, which was destroyed during the Nika Revolts. Hagia Sophia is the epitome of Byzantine architecture. It is dominated by a massive dome that one observer remarked “appeared to hover suspended from heaven by a golden chain”. Many roofers in Michigan can create magnificent domed roofs reminiscent of Roman and Byzantine architecture.
Other magnificent examples of domed architecture include the multiple domes that were commonly employed in the construction of Orthodox Churches in Russia. Russian church domes were often gilded and brightly painted, which gives many churches a delightful appearance. The onion domes that adorn St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow are remarkable examples. Many roofing companies in Michigan can create domed roofing that imbues homes with a dramatic appearance.
Domes also dominated some of the greatest structures of the Muslim world and Mughal India. The Taj Mahal in Agra, India was built by the Shah to commemorate his beloved dead wife. The Taj Mahal is constructed of white marble and is topped with a marble dome (often called the guava dome) which is 35 meters high. Many roofers in Michigan can create guava domes that imbue a home with character too.
