Visit Paris and Manchester Hotels To Enjoy Fantastic Museums

Paris and Manchester are brilliant cities to visit if you’re looking for a cultural break. Manchester and Paris both have hundreds of museums to choose from showing everything from 18th century medicine to a tramway museum. With so many different things to see you’re bound to find an exhibition that you’ll enjoy. Explore away from the main museums to find quirky and interesting museums. Who knows? You could even discover a new interest. With some brilliant Paris and Manchester hotels close to many of these museums, you can have a cheap stay that will allow you to explore your interests.

 

Manchester

 

For an impressive museum that is a bit out of the ordinary, head to Manchester’s Tramway Museum. At this little known attraction you can explore the history of tram use within Manchester, which is housed in a former tram depot. The exhibits use photographs and artifacts by bygone eras to look at how trams changed the face of Manchester. The museum also has several trams, which are hundreds of years old, including some horse-drawn ones.

 

It’s worth heading just outside of Manchester to visit the Stockport Air Raid Shelters. You’ll find that this museum is close to several very cheap Manchester hotels on the outskirts of the city. The Stockport Air Raid Shelters are a series of labyrinths and tunnels designed to protect inhabitants of Stockport and the surrounding cities during WW II air raids. Today, visitors can walk through restored tunnels fitted with bunk beds, a first aid post and electric lights that will give them a taste of what life was like for British citizens during the war.

For a condensed history of the British working class, visit the People’s History Museum. This museum uses narratives, photos and videos to tell the story of ordinary British people’s lives and the nation’s two-century-long struggle for democracy. Among the topics covered are the Women’s Suffragette Movement, football, the Peterloo Massacre, Popular Radicalism and 19th Century Trade Unionism.

Paris

For a museum that the kids will love to, consider heading to Musée des Arts Forains.This museum showcases the equipment used by 19th century travelling fairs. Tours are offered by appointment only so contact the museum before your arrival to ensure admittance. Once inside you can play with, or ride on, many of the attractions, including merry-go-rounds with carved animals and German swings.

For a fascinating insight into the history of the French police, visit the Musée de la Préfecture de Police. This museum is in a working police station in Paris. You can see historical police uniforms and weapons, such as a sharp and well-used guillotine blade, as well as evidence from many famous Parisian police cases, including the train ticket that led to the apprehension of Paris’ most famous mass murderer, Henri Landru.

For a more macabre museum, visit Musée d’Histoire de la Médecine . Here you will find this museum hidden in a small corner of the René Descartes University. The museum’s collection provides a glimpse into the often-gruesome history of French medicine and dentistry. It includes displays of the equipment used to treat many common medical conditions, as well as related artwork. It is also close to some of the best quirky Paris hotels
