Purchasing a Used Toyota or Used Car in New Jersey – Important Tips to Keep in Mind

The first step to purchasing a used Toyota vehicle or used car is to check the used car history report. These car history records are generally guarantee that the car you’re going to purchase is worth the money spent. Although they may not guarantee that the Toyota is 100% perfect, they may uncover important problems the vehicle has experienced in the past, namely rental use, odometer readings, damage due to flooding, or significant accidents.

The next step when purchasing a used car in New Jersey is to research common problems for the make and model of Toyota you’re interested in. Even before you take your test drive, thoroughly research common complaints and problems, read owner reviews, forums, websites, and other sources. You’ll then have a good idea of what other owners have problems and know what to pay attention to during the test drive and ask the salesperson.

Purchasing a Used Car in New Jersey: Check the Toyota Body

Walk around the vehicle and inspect its general appearance—this is a strong indicator of how well the car was taken care of. Note any defects you find—cracks, scratches, corrosion spots, dents, broken lenses, worn wipers, missing wheel covers, faded mirrors, and dings in the windshield. You may wish to mention these to the Toyota dealer to fix these problems as part of a deal or negotiate the price down as necessary. Take your time inspecting the Toyota—it should take 30-40 minutes to perform a full body check. Car body lines should be perfectly straight, reflection should not ripple and paint quality on panels should be identical. Ripples are an indication of body repair. Look for unrepaired corrosion spots around wheel arches, lower door panels, etc… Lastly, check for a trailer hitch—if you see one, this may be an indication that the Toyota was used for heavy towing and the engine and transmission may be overworked.

Before purchasing a used car in New Jersey, take a good look at its tires. Are they from a solid and reputable brand, i.e. Goodyear, Bridgestone, Michelin, or are they a “no name” product. Are all tires of the same brand and do they look identical? Check tread wear—you’ll find that new tires for Toyota vehicles have original thread depth of 8 mm. If you can see pebbles, bubbles, cracks, or any sign of mechanical damage, the tire must be replaced. Irregular wear is an indicator of alignment and suspension problems.

Remember–before purchasing any vehicle, it’s a good idea to have it inspected by a mechanic prior to purchase—there are many components that can only be properly inspected by a professional.
